How It Works
First stage, Water passes through a 20" sediment filter cartridge that removes sediment, silt, sand, and dirt. Also extends the lifespan of the water filter.
In step 2, water flows through filter pads (1 micron is equal to 1/25,000 of an inch), which remove suspended particles such as silt, sediment, cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), sand, rust, dirt, and other undissolved materials.
In step 3, water runs through granulated activated carbon (GAC). GAC is widely recognized and extensively used as an effective adsorbent for a variety of organic contaminants, such as chlorine (99.9%), cancer-linked chemicals (THMs, benzene) pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds (VOC), PCBs, MTBEs, and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present in water creating bad taste and odor. Carbon is extremely porous and provides a large surface area for contaminants to collect. Pure carbon filters must also use their capacity to remove chlorine, resulting in a shortened lifespan. They may also use a bituminous coal/carbon, which is good at removing chlorine, but not as effective at removing chemicals. We use a very high-quality coconut shell carbon which is most effective at removing chemicals. Coconut shells provide a significantly larger volume of micro-pores than any coal, wood, or lignite-based carbon. As a result, it is more effective than other types of carbon and eliminates trihalomethanes (THMs) and other chemicals commonly found in municipal tap water. Because our Redox media removes chlorine before it reaches carbon, the carbon's capacity is not wasted on chlorine and is free to concentrate more effectively on organic contaminants.
In step 4, water flows through ion exchange resins, reducing heavy metals such as lead, copper, aluminum, and also reduces water hardness.
In stages 5 and 6, water flows through a bed of media made of a specially high purity alloy mixture of two different metals - copper and zinc (Eagle Redox Alloy® 6500, and Eagle Redox Alloy® 9500). Eagle Redox Alloy® is a significant advancement in water purification technology that works on electro-chemical and spontaneous oxidation-reduction (redox) principles. Chlorine is instantaneously oxidized. Tests on Eagle Redox Alloy®/GAC cartridge have shown 99+ percent removal of chlorine up to 20,000 liters of water. In comparison to ordinary carbon cartridges in comparable volumes drop below 90% efficiency after only 4,000 liters. Iron and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized to insoluble material and adhere to the surface of the media. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, cadmium, aluminum, and other dissolved metals are removed from the water through the electrochemical process. They are attracted to the surface of the media, somewhat like a magnet. The media inhibits bacterial growth throughout the unit. In fact, it has been proven to reduce up to 90%, eliminating the need for silver, which is often used in carbon-only filters (considered a pesticide by the EPA and as such must be registered with them).
In step 7, water flows through another one-micron filtering pad for further reduction of unwanted particles. The final result is a significant reduction or complete elimination of a large amount of contaminants.
In step 8, water runs through a 20" solid carbon cartridge to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs, insecticides, pesticides, and industrial solvents).
