How it works

Stage 1, Water passes through a 20" sediment filter cartridge that removes sediment, silt, sand, and dirt. Also extends the life of the water filters.

Stage 2, Water flows through filter pads (1 micron equals 1/25,000 of an inch), which remove suspended particles such as silt, sediment, cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), sand, rust, dirt, and other undissolved material.

Stage 3, Water passes through granulated activated carbon (GAC). GAC is widely recognized and used as an effective absorbent for a variety of organic contaminants, such as chlorine (99.9%), chemicals linked to cancer (THMs, gasoline) pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds (VOC), PCBs, MTBEs, and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present in water creating bad taste and odor. Carbon is extremely porous and provides a large surface area for contaminants to collect. Only carbon filters must also use their capacity to remove chlorine, resulting in a shortened lifespan. They might also use bituminous coal/coal, which is good at removing chlorine but not as effective in removing chemicals. We use a very high quality coconut shell-based carbon which is most effective in removing chemicals. Coconut shell provides a significantly larger volume of micro-pores than any coal, wood or lignite based carbon. As a result, it is more effective than other types of carbon and eliminates trihalomethanes (THMs) and other chemicals typically found in municipal tap water. Since our Redox media removes chlorine before it reaches the carbon, the carbon's capacity is not wasted on chlorine and is free to concentrate more effectively on organic contaminants.

Stage 4, Water flows through ion exchange resin, reducing heavy metals such as lead, copper, aluminum, and also reducing water hardness.

Stages 5 and 6, Water flows through a bed of media made from a specially pure alloy blend of two different metals - copper and zinc (Eagle Redox Alloy® 6500, and Eagle Redox Alloy® 9500). Eagle Redox Alloy® is a major advance in water purification technology that operates on electro-chemical and spontaneous oxidation-reduction (redox) principles. Chlorine is instantaneously oxidized. Tests on Eagle Redox Alloy® / GAC cartridge have shown 99+ percent removal of chlorine up to 20,000 liters of water. In comparison to ordinary carbon cartridges in comparable volumes, efficacy drops below 90% after only 4,000 liters. Iron and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized to insoluble material and adhere to the surface of the media. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chrome, cadmium, aluminum, and other dissolved metals are removed from the water through the electrochemical process. They are attracted to the surface of the media, much like a magnet. The media inhibits bacterial growth throughout the unit. In fact, it has been shown to reduce it by up to 90%, eliminating the need for silver, which is often used in carbon-only filters (considered a pesticide by the EPA and as such must be registered with them).

Stage 7, Water flows through another one-micron filter pad for further reduction of unwanted particles. The end result is a significant reduction or complete elimination of a large number of contaminants.

Stage 8, Water runs through a 20" solid carbon cartridge to remove volatile organic compounds (VOC, insecticides, pesticides, and industrial solvents).
